Show info | If you long for the great pop organ sounds of yesteryear, tune in for a program called "THE MIGHTY ORGAN", which will air on the internet only at www.wfdu.fm <http://www.wfdu.fm> from 4p~5p every Monday afternoon, hosted by noted organist Ed Alstrom.
It will feature the rarely-heard (these days) sound of mid-century pop organ, by some of the greatest organists ever to walk the Earth: Ethel Smith, Lenny Dee, Klaus Wunderlich, Jesse Crawford, Eddie Layton, John Kiley, Don Baker, George Wright, and many more, from a time when the organ was justifiably called "The King of Instruments".
This hour-long sonic wonderland will feauture not only the Hammond and other electronic organs, but also theater pipe organs and other electronic instruments.
The people you'll be hearing were real organists, who orchestrated on the fly and know how to use all of the sonic capabilities of the instruments. They often played bass pedals, and fluently. They exhibit ingenuity and resourcefulness far beyond the average 'jazz' organist.
If you've never heard this music, there is truly nothing like it. Underneath the often glorious tackiness and quaint hokum, there is a palpable joy and buoyancy, as well as some overwhelming displays of multi-limbed technique. You can't help but smile while listening to it!
Tune in online from 4p~5p every Monday for "The Mighty Organ" at www.wfdu.fm <http://www.wfdu.fm> (also now found on iHeart Radio) |
